CrossFit Level 1 Certification
I have a broad spectrum of athletic experience that started with playing multiple high school sports (cross country, track, field hockey, volleyball, and softball) and then playing field hockey through college. After college, I focused on climbing and mountaineering as well as long-distance running and was lucky to land in Bishop and the Eastern Sierra. Raising my son, I found myself drawn into coaching, playing, and refereeing youth soccer, roller hockey, and swimming. I found CrossFit in 2009, at the age of 48 (at the suggestion of Phill, another CFR coach), and fell in love with the variety and combination of strength, gymnastics, and metcons as well as the camaraderie and supportive community.
There is no way around the fact that I am the oldest coach at Radiate. However, I feel that my age and overall experience give me a special perspective on the needs of the older athlete. Many older athletes may be hesitant to join CrossFit due to deconditioning, previous injuries or limitations, or misperceptions of what CrossFit is. With two hip replacements (I have my own limitations - maybe too much running in the past?), I feel that I have a unique experience and perspective that I am able to bring to my coaching. One of the things I really enjoy is working with athletes to make sure they are able to get as much out of the programming as possible including adjusting a movement or workout to something doable for the athlete or focusing on solid form and technique. It is amazing what an older (and any) athlete is capable of with some encouragement and support!
